Questions buyers ask.
What distributors, importers and retail buyers ask us most often. Anything not covered here, write to us and we answer in writing.
- Is this salmon or trout? What is the exact species?
- Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, farmed in fresh water. We sell it as trout or salmon trout, never as salmon: the species is different, and mislabelling it fails import control.
- What water do the fish grow in?
- Artesian water from the basin under the Ararat Valley. It reaches the surface on its own at around 14 °C and barely changes in temperature between August and January.
- What is the relationship between the trading company and the farms?
- Ishkhan has its head office in the UAE and farms in Armenia. Wholesale deliveries can go directly to any country, without passing through the UAE; availability, routes and terms are confirmed per order. Retail delivery is available only in the UAE. - Is the feed free of antibiotics, hormones and GMO?
- Yes. The feed is extruded and contains no antibiotics, no hormones and no GMO. It is supplied from Denmark, Italy and Armenia.
- Is the fish treated with carbon monoxide or additives?
- No. There is no post-harvest treatment of any kind: no carbon monoxide, no colourants, no preservatives.
- How soon does fish leave the farm after harvest?
- Fish are chilled on site within hours of harvest and dispatched the same day. The farm is eleven kilometres from Zvartnots International Airport.
- How do you ship chilled fish, and how long does it take?
- By air, under temperature control. Yerevan (EVN) has daily flights, and a chilled consignment reaches Dubai one to two days after dispatch.
- At what temperature is the product held?
- Chilled product is held at 0 … +2 °C from processing to dispatch. Deep frozen product is held at −18 °C.
- Can a batch be traced back to its origin?
- Yes, from the egg onwards. Every batch can be traced to the pool it was grown in.
- Can you produce under our own brand?
- Yes, private label is possible. Formats, packing and labelling are agreed per order.
- How long have you been farming, and at what volume?
- Since 2011, on the same water in the Ararat Valley. The farm produces around 3 000 tonnes of fish a year.
- How do we get formats, volumes and a quotation?
